3 Simple Ways to Show Respect in A Relationship

Respect is one of the most important aspects of a relationship because it communicates that you and your significant other are equals. When there’s respect shared between a couple, each person is free to be their own person; with their own experiences and opinions. “Giving and receiving respect in a relationship is very important to its success,” explains Relationship Coach Renee Richel, Founder of 1 True Match. “When your partner feels respected, they feel safe to express themselves and trust that you will accept them,” explains Renee.”

So how do you show and give your partner respect? After years of working with couples here are Renee’s top 3 tips to make sure you’re showing your partner respect in your relationship:

Practice Open, Mindful Communication

Communication is essential to having a happy, healthy relationship. Sure, asking your significant other about their day is a great way to start a conversation. However, you have to be able to have those deep conversations in order for your relationship to move forward; this requires trust and an open mind. Here are some ways to include signs of respect as you communicate:

  • Ask open-ended questions: By asking open-ended questions, your significant other has the opportunity to share however much they want to. Remember, everyone has their own emotional boundaries and your significant other may not be ready to dive into a deep conversation just yet. Be respectful and mindful of the boundaries they may have, just like they should be to your boundaries as well.
  • Pick up on non-verbal cues: Communication isn’t only about the words, but about how we say them. Your significant other may say one thing, but their tone and attitude say another. Over time, if you are paying respectful attention, you will be able to pick up on these cues and can gauge how you should respond in an understanding and respectful way.
  • Remember your health and wellbeing come first: You and your partner need to be able to communicate your thoughts and feelings in a way that is good for both of you. If it’s a sensitive subject, lead into the conversation by saying your intent is to come to a resolution. There’s no winning if the conversation creates an argument. It’s critical that respecting each other is applied during the tough talks as well as the casual conversations.

Demonstrate Trust

In any relationship, trust is what builds that special bond. Sure, you can feel like you trust your partner. However, proving that you trust them with your actions demonstrates that you respect them and your relationship. Instead of consistently calling or texting them throughout the day, consider sending a message to say you’re thinking about them and hope to hear from them soon. If you feel like there’s something odd going on, talk to them about it before jumping to conclusions and acting irrationally; practice open, mindful communication to resolve the issue. If you can’t trust, it’s tough to show respect.

Be Accountable

Being accountable goes hand in hand with being trustworthy. When your partner knows they can depend on you, it means a lot to the relationship. If you make plans, follow through. If you messed up, take responsibility for your actions. Knowing that each of you can hold the other accountable and hold yourself accountable during the relationship shows that you respect the relationship, each other, and yourself. “Another great practice to get into a routine to hold each other accountable is to find the time daily for sharing what’s on your heart with God out loud to also have your partner hear,” adds Richel.  “Couples that make time to pray together have a much better chance of staying together.”
